There is every conceivable water sport and each beach or 'playa' has its own unique feel. 'Playa de la Marina' pictured above with has sand dunes, pinewoods, eucalyptus and palm trees. (See our BEACHES page for more and pictures to whet your appetite!)
Enjoy a slow walk, and amble along for as far as the eye can see as you watch the cute sandpiper birds running in and out of the waves wading for food. Try out some water sports, or perhaps simply soak up the sun's rays and enjoy a refreshing drink and sample some tapas at one of the many chiringuito beach bars on the beach.
Look out too for some unexpected sand sculpture, art-crafted out of the sand by skilful artists. This is seen at various beaches including the Paseo Maritimo de Guardamar.

The area surrounding Rojales and is a haven for nature lovers, with numerous Nature Reserves. Two well known Natural Parks, La Mata Laguna and La Mata Torrevieja with their respective Lagoons are just over 10 minutes by car. The two salt lakes are known well as the one is green and the other pink in colour with the pink lakes colour being caused by a natural phenomenon due to the high content of salt in the water.
The lagoons are a vast region of salt marshes and lagoon waters with reed beds which are filled with migratory birds, including the famous pink flamingos that can be seen in late summer. This is a bird lovers paradise with numerous places to go at different times of the year for spotting all kinds of birds such as the following:

There are a large number of marked trails for both walking and cycling which take you to some of the finest sights and best hides for seeing bird life. (The birds found at the lagoons are the same birds that can be seen flying in their flocks silhouetted by the evening sunset as you sip a glass of wine from your terrace or solarium.)

Through the centre of town along the River is where many Spanish families meet and relax and you can while away a few hours and mingle with the locals who enjoy 'al fresccito' (sitting outside with friends) during the warm summer evenings. In winter they are there too but with an extra layer on!
In the centre of town you will find many restaurants, cafes and tapas bars, where you can sit and dine or sip away and listen to the chatter of the locals as they chew over what is going on or watch them maybe playing a game of dominoes with great local passion.
